Dr. Ricardo Salas
Director of Hematology/Oncology
Dr. Salas is excited to return to the San Joaquin Valley and join Rio Bravo Cancer Center in Bakersfield. After recently completing his fellowship training in Medical Hematology/Oncology at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, he has returned to the very roots that propelled his career.
He is originally from Selma CA, about 1.5 hours north of Bakersfield where most of his family still resides.He attended the University of California Berkeley where he majored in Molecular Cell Biology. From there, he went on to complete a master’s degree in Public Health at San Diego State University School of Public Health while working for the American Cancer Society (ACS). He then went on to complete his medical degree(MD) from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He then completed his residency and fellowship in a joint training program at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, Cedars Sinai Medical Center and the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Group.
As a child of farm-working parents, he experienced first hand the challenges and disparities many farm-working families face, particularly access to health care. Dr. Salas’ interests and research during his academic career has focused on identifying barriers to healthcare access for medically underserved communities including sun safety practices among farmworkers in the San Joaquin Valley.
Dr. Salas is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Hematology. When Dr. Salas is not working, he enjoys spending time in the outdoors with his family. He also travels to Selma, CA, where his parents continue to reside.
